Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers Matchday 2: Game of the Week Preview
Eritrea’s meeting with South Africa is the standout fixture of Matchday 2 in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with both sides carrying points from their opening Group D matches. The game is scheduled for 30 September 2026 at Al Salam Stadium in Cairo, with kick-off at 16:00 GMT. The match will be played at a neutral venue.
Eritrea opened their qualifying campaign with an impressive 1-1 draw against co-hosts Kenya in Nairobi on 26 September. Nahom Girmai Netabay put Eritrea ahead in the first half, before Kenya’s Ryan Ogam equalised in the 87th minute. The result earned Eritrea a point away from home and left them level with Kenya after the opening round.
South Africa also made a winning start, defeating Guinea 2-1 at Orlando Stadium. Ime Okon opened the scoring before Seydouba Cissé brought Guinea level, but Samukele Kabini restored South Africa’s lead in the 77th minute to give Bafana Bafana all three points. The victory marked a positive start to Pitso Mosimane’s return as South Africa coach.
The opening results have given South Africa an early advantage in Group D, while Eritrea remain within touching distance after their draw. Kenya are already guaranteed a place at the 2027 finals as one of the co-hosts, meaning only the highest-placed team among South Africa, Eritrea and Guinea will join the hosts from Group D. That makes every point particularly important as the qualification campaign develops.
Eritrea will therefore look to build on their disciplined performance in Nairobi when they face South Africa in Cairo. South Africa, meanwhile, will aim to follow up their victory over Guinea with another positive result and strengthen their position in the group.
