Premier League Season Preview 2026-27

The Premier League returns for 2026-27 with a new champion, three newly promoted clubs and plenty of changes across the division.

Arsenal enter the campaign as reigning champions after winning the 2025/26 title, while Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City arrive from the Championship.

There are also significant changes in the dugouts and squads. Liverpool begin the campaign under new head coach Andoni Iraola after finishing fifth last season, while Manchester United, Aston Villa and Liverpool all enter the new season with Champions League football ahead.

The summer transfer window remains open until 1 September, meaning squads can still change after the league campaign begins.

This preview covers the opening fixtures, the leading contenders for the title and European places, the clubs facing the biggest survival challenge, notable summer transfers and the players who could shape the season.

When Does The Premier League Start?

The 2026-27 Premier League season begins on Friday, 21 August 2026. Arsenal, the reigning champions, open the campaign to newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates.

The first full weekend continues on Saturday, 22 August, when Hull City host Manchester United, Ipswich Town welcome Sunderland, Everton face Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest play Leeds United and Brentford host Tottenham Hotspur.

On Sunday 23 August, Manchester City meet Bournemouth, Brighton play Aston Villa and Newcastle host Liverpool, before Fulham face Chelsea on Monday.

The later start is a consequence of the expanded international calendar and the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Premier League has scheduled 33 weekends and five midweek match rounds, with the final round taking place on Sunday, 30 May 2027.

Who Are Favourites To Win The Premier League?

Arsenal begin the season as defending champions and are among the leading contenders to retain the title. They finished seven points clear of Manchester City in 2025/26 and will look to build on a campaign in which their defensive consistency helped them end a 22-year wait for the title.

Manchester City remain a major threat. They finished second last season and have added to their midfield with the signing of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest. Pep Guardiola has also been replaced by Enzo Maresca, creating an important tactical storyline as City attempt to reclaim the title.

Liverpool are another leading contender, although their situation is considerably different from the one described in the original preview. They finished fifth in 2025/26, changed manager from Arne Slot to Andoni Iraola and have been active in the transfer market.

Manchester United also deserve attention after finishing third last season and qualifying for the Champions League. Captain Bruno Fernandes was named the 2025/26 Premier League Player of the Season after contributing 28 goals and assists in the league, while Michael Carrick continues as head coach.

Which Teams Could Reach Europe?

The European picture is already partly defined by last season’s results. Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Liverpool qualified for the Champions League, with Liverpool taking the additional European Performance Spot after finishing fifth.

Bournemouth and Sunderland qualified for the Europa League, while Brighton & Hove Albion qualified for the Conference League. Crystal Palace also return to Europe after winning the Conference League.

That leaves a highly competitive battle for the remaining positions. Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Chelsea, Nottingham Forest and other established clubs will be looking to close the gap, while Brighton have already demonstrated that their recruitment and tactical structure can keep them competitive against better-funded opponents.

Aston Villa will also have to balance domestic football with Champions League commitments. For clubs competing in Europe, squad depth and rotation will be particularly important, especially during periods when domestic and continental fixtures are close together.

Who Are Favourites To Get Relegated?

The three promoted clubs are Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City, replacing Wolverhampton Wanderers, Burnley and West Ham United after those three clubs were relegated from the Premier League.

As the newly promoted sides prepare for a higher level of competition, survival will be a primary objective. Current betting markets make Hull City, Ipswich Town and Coventry City the three teams most strongly associated with relegation.

The 2025-26 Premier League season saw two of the promoted teams, Sunderland and Leeds, survive while West Ham and Wolves were relegated. Although markets represent bookmaker expectations, the 2025-26 season shows that this is never a guarantee.

The opening fixtures provide contrasting challenges. Coventry begin away at champions Arsenal, Ipswich host Sunderland and Hull welcome Manchester United.

For any club involved in the survival battle, points accumulation, defensive organisation and squad depth are likely to matter throughout a long campaign. Established Premier League sides can also become vulnerable if injuries, poor form or managerial changes disrupt their season.

Premier League Key Summer Transfers

The summer transfer window is still open and will close at 23:00 BST on Tuesday, 1 September, so this section should be regarded as a snapshot rather than a final assessment of each squad.

Arsenal have signed Greece international winger Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge. The 24-year-old arrives after an outstanding season in Belgium, where he scored 17 goals and supplied 23 assists in the league. Arsenal have also made Piero Hincapié’s move from Bayer Leverkusen permanent.

Manchester City have added England midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, giving new head coach Enzo Maresca another midfield option;  however, star player Rodri has left for Barcelona.

Liverpool have begun rebuilding under Iraola, with Jeremy Jacquet arriving from Rennes and Victor Muñoz joining from Osasuna. The club are also preparing for a season in which Champions League football will add to their domestic workload.

Tottenham have completed the signing of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle, while Newcastle have consequently lost an important midfield presence. Several other clubs have also been active, and further deals remain possible before the 1 September deadline. That means transfer assessments made before the window closes should be treated as provisional.

Who Are The Key Players To Watch?

Erling Haaland remains one of Manchester City’s principal attacking threats after winning the 2025/26 Premier League Golden Boot with 27 goals. His ability to convert chances at a high rate makes him a central figure in City’s attempt to reclaim the title.

Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka will again be an important creative and attacking outlet for the champions. His ability to contribute from the right side gives Mikel Arteta a reliable source of progression, chances and goals.

At Manchester United, Bruno Fernandes enters the season after an exceptional campaign. He was voted the 2025/26 Premier League Player of the Season and set a new Premier League assists record, making his creativity a major part of United’s attacking approach.

Other players could quickly emerge as decisive figures, particularly after the World Cup and as new signings settle into unfamiliar systems. Fitness and availability may be as important as individual quality during the opening months.

Premier League Early Season Predictions

Arsenal start the season as defending champions and the current betting market’s leading title contenders, with Manchester City and Liverpool next in the market. Manchester United and Chelsea are also among the sides attracting significant expectations for high finishes.

The European race should be similarly competitive. Manchester United, Aston Villa and Liverpool enter the campaign with Champions League commitments, while Bournemouth, Sunderland, Brighton and Crystal Palace have European football of their own. Managing those additional fixtures could have a significant effect on domestic form.

At the other end of the table, Hull City, Ipswich Town and Coventry City face the challenge of adapting to Premier League football immediately after promotion. The first few weeks will provide an early indication of whether the promoted sides can collect enough points to stay clear of trouble.

Any prediction made before the transfer window closes remains provisional. With clubs still able to buy and sell players until 1 September, the shape of several squads could change after the opening two league matches.
